Namun sebenarnya, versi cerita yang kita kenal dari Grimm bersaudara ini merupakan adaptasi dari dongeng Rapunzel karya Friedrich Schulz yang rilis pada tahun 1790.<\/p>\n Lebih jauh lagi, Schulz menerjemahkan cerita tersebut dari Persinette,<\/strong> sebuah dongeng yang ditulis oleh Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force di tahun 1698.<\/p>\n Dongeng ini sendiri sudah banyak dipengaruhi oleh cerita-cerita Italia yang lebih tua, seperti Petrosinella<\/strong> yang ditulis pada tahun 1634 oleh Giambattista Basile.<\/p>\n Dalam cerita Basile, seorang putri dikurung di sebuah menara, tapi bukan oleh penyihir, melainkan oleh ayahnya sendiri. Kisah ini yang akhirnya menginspirasi Grimm Bersaudara untuk menulis cerita Rapunzel, tentang seorang putri yang dikurung oleh penyihir jahat.<\/p>\n Menariknya, ketika menulis cerita ini, Grimm Bersaudara sempat kebingungan menentukan nama untuk tokoh putri tersebut. Setelah melalui banyak pertimbangan, mereka akhirnya memilih nama ‘Rapunzel.’ Nama ini ternyata berasal dari tanaman rampion. More than anything they yearned for a child of their own. At long last, their wish came true \u2013 they were going to have a baby!<\/em><\/p>\n From their second floor window, the wife could see the garden next door. Such fine straight rows of fresh green plants! But no one dared to see them up close, for the garden belonged to a witch.<\/em><\/p>\n One day the wife was staring at the garden from her window. How delicious those big green heads of lettuce looked! \u201cI must eat one of them,\u201d she said to her husband. \u201cYou must go and get me some.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n “I cannot!\u201d said her husband. \u201cYou know as well as I do that the garden belongs to a witch.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cIf I cannot have that lettuce,\u201d said the wife, \u201cI will not eat anything at all. I will die!”<\/em><\/p>\n What could the carpenter do? Later that night, he climbed over the garden wall. Taking very quiet steps, he broke one green head of lettuce from the ground. Holding the lettuce close to his chest, he climbed back over the garden wall. She saw your lettuce and wanted it so very much.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cWhy does that matter?\u201d howled the witch.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cI will do anything to make this right!\u201d begged the carpenter. He thought, “Surely I can build her something she would like.”<\/em><\/p>\n “I will do anything to make this right!” begged the carpenter.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cYou say you will do anything?\u201d said the witch.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cYes, name it!\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cFine!\u201d said the witch. \u201cHere’s the deal. Go ahead – take all the lettuce you want. Your wife will have a baby girl. And when she does, the baby will be mine!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cWhat?!\u201d said the carpenter. \u201cI will never agree to that!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cYou already did!\u201d said the witch. And she laughed an evil laugh.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Part 2: The Tower<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Indeed, the wife had a baby girl just as the witch had predicted. To keep the baby safe from the witch, the carpenter built a tall tower deep in the woods. He built a staircase that led up to a room at the very top, and he installed one long, pointed window in that top room. He and his wife took turns staying there with the baby.<\/em><\/p>\n But the witch had a magic ball, and the magic ball showed the baby was in the top room of this tower. When the carpenter and his wife were both inside the house, the witch cast a spell over both of them and they fell into a deep sleep. The witch went directly to the tower, and up to room at the top, where the baby slept in its cradle.<\/em><\/p>\n “You are mine!” hissed the witch. “I will call you Rapunzel, for that is the name of the lettuce that brought you to me.”<\/em><\/p>\n With her magic, the witch sent the carpenter and his wife back to their cottage.<\/em><\/p>\n The witch did not know how to take care of a baby. Rapunzel grew into a child, and the witch did not know how to cut her hair. The girl\u2019s blond hair grew longer and longer.<\/em><\/p>\n All the witch could do was keep the little girl locked in the room at the very top of the tower. She told the child that the world was a very bad place, and that is why she must never leave the tower.<\/em><\/p>\n As she grew up, many times Rapunzel said to the witch, \u201cThere is nothing here for me to do! Why must I stay in this tower all the time?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n And the witch shouted back, \u201cI told you so many times! The world is a very bad place. Now comb your hair and be quiet!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n “Why must I stay in this tower all the time?”<\/em><\/p>\n “Is it really so bad out there?” Rapunzel would sometimes insist. “I hear people laughing down there below the window.”<\/em><\/p>\n At such times the witch would yell, “How many times do I have to repeat myself? Don’t listen to anything you see or hear out there. The world is much worse than you think.”<\/em><\/p>\n On her 12th birthday, Rapunzel found the courage to say to the witch, \u201cI don’t care what you say anymore. I’m so tired of staying here alone all the time! When you are gone, I will chip away at the door. I will make a hole. I will run down the stairs and go outside, and you can’t stop me!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cYou think so?” said the witch. “Think again!\u201d With her power, she made the staircase in the tower collapse. She closed up the door at the base of the tower so there was no trace of it. Now there was no way for Rapunzel to escape!<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Part 3: A Singing Voice<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n By then, Rapunzel\u2019s hair had grown very, very long. Once the stairs were gone, when it was time for the witch to visit her in the tower, she would call from outside, \u201cRapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n Rapunzel would throw her long blond braid out of the window. The witch would grab hold of her hair like a rope. And that is how the witch climbed up the tower wall to the window in Rapunzel\u2019s room.<\/em><\/p>\n Five more long years went by. Poor Rapunzel! She had to stay in that room, day after day. All she could do was sing sad songs from the window. Sometimes birds at the treetops would join her songs. Then she would feel a little better. But only a little.<\/em><\/p>\n One day, a Prince was riding through the woods. He heard the sound of beautiful singing. It seemed like it was coming from the treetops but of course that was impossible. He rode closer to the sound and at last, was standing before the tower.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThis is odd!\u201d he said, looking around the base of the tower. \u201cThere is no door to get in. Yet someone is singing at the very top of the tower. How does anyone get in or out?\u201d The singing enchanted him, and the Prince found himself returning to the tower each day. Who was this young woman? And why was she there every day?<\/em><\/p>\n One day when the Prince rode up to the tower, he saw an old woman standing at the base of the tower. He jumped behind a tree to hide. He heard the witch call out, \u201cRapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!\u201d A long blond braid was thrown out from a window at the very top. The old woman grabbed onto the braid and climbed to the window at the very top of the tower.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cAh, ha!\u201d thought the Prince. “So that is how it’s done.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n He waited. After a bit, the braid was thrown out the window again. The witch climbed back down the tower wall. Then she left.<\/em><\/p>\n The Prince waited some more. He stepped up to the tower. In a voice that sounded as much like the witch as he could, he called out, \u201cRapunzel, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!\u201d In a moment, the same long blond braid came out of the window. \u201cIt works!\u201d thought the Prince. He climbed up the tower wall!<\/em><\/p>\n You can be sure Rapunzel was very surprised to see the Prince climb into her window. She had never seen a person up close before other than the witch, much less a man! \u201cWho are you?\u201d she said in fear.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cDo not worry,\u201d said the Prince. \u201cI am a friend.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cI do not know you,\u201d said Rapunzel.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cI feel as if I know you,\u201d said the Prince. \u201cSince I have heard you singing every day. You have a beautiful voice! I love it when the birds sing with you, too.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cYou know about that?\u201d said Rapunzel. \u201cIt may be the only thing I like, since I have no choice but to stay here in this same old tower, day after day, my whole life long.\u201d Rapunzel told the Prince about the witch. She told him that since the world was such a very bad place, she must always stay in the tower room.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cBut the world is not as bad as all that,\u201d said the Prince. He told Rapunzel about flowers and festivals, gardens and games, puddles and puppies, strawberries and secrets. She was fascinated.<\/em><\/p>\n “But the world is not as bad as all that,” said the Prince.<\/em><\/p>\n And so many hours went by. At last, Rapunzel said to the Prince, “You must go. The witch may come back at any time.”<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cVery well,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I will be back tomorrow.\u201d Rapunzel threw her braid out the window, and the Prince climbed down.<\/em><\/p>\n The next day, the Prince climbed back up to Rapunzel\u2019s room. He said, \u201cI have a surprise for you.\u201d He had brought her a basket of strawberries.<\/em><\/p>\n As she tasted a strawberry Rapunzel thought, “What I was told is not true! The world can be a very fine place. What else is there that I am missing?” She said to the Prince, “I must get out of this tower as soon as I can! But how?”<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Part 4: Escape<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n The Prince said, “I can come and go by holding onto your braid. But once I am down, the problem is – how do we get you down, too?”<\/em><\/p>\n Then suddenly, Rapunzel had an idea. “Bring me a ball of silk each time you come. I will weave the silk into a ladder. Silk folds up so small that the Witch won’t see it. When the ladder gets long enough to reach the ground, I will follow you by climbing down the silk ladder.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThat will work!\u201d cried the Prince. He moved closer to Rapunzel. “You know, out in the world when two people like each other very much, they can do something very special. It’s called getting married and that means the two people can always be together. Do you think you might want to get married someday?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cMaybe,\u201d said Rapunzel, “there is so much I have to learn about the outside world. And we can still spend time together even if we are not married, isn’t that right?”<\/em><\/p>\n “Of course,” said the Prince, thinking that he can be patient. Every day after that, the Prince brought one ball of silk to Rapunzel. Over time, she weaved the silk into a long ladder.<\/em><\/p>\n On Rapunzel\u2019s 18th birthday the witch spoke to her in a sharp voice. \u201cI am sick and tired of hearing you go on and on about being alone in this tower all the time. Know this, Rapunzel. That is not going to change. You will stay in this tower – forever!”<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cWho says I\u2019m alone in the room all the time?\u201d said Rapunzel.<\/em><\/p>\n “Who says I’m alone in the room all the time?” said Rapunzel.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cWhat?!\u201d said the witch. \u201cWho’s been up here with you?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cNo one!\u201d said Rapunzel at once, in fear. \u201cI mean, no one but you!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The witch did not believe her. She looked everywhere in the room for something to prove that someone else had been there. She found the ladder and held it high in the air. She yelled, \u201cWhat is the meaning of this?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cMy friend the Prince brought me the silk, and I made the ladder,\u201d said Rapunzel.<\/em><\/p>\n “You will never see this Prince again!\u201d yelled the witch. She took out a knife. Snip, snap, and Rapunzel’s lovely braid was cut off!<\/em><\/p>\n Holding the braid in one hand, the witch laughed an evil laugh.<\/em><\/p>\n Then, with a stroke of her magic, Rapunzel was cast off to a faraway desert. But the witch stayed in the tower room. She knew the Prince would soon return.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Part 5: The Last Climb<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n The witch did not have to wait long. Before long the Prince was calling at the bottom of the tower, \u201cRapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n “So that is how he did it!” said the witch. Holding tightly to one end of Rapunzel’s braid, she threw the braid out the window. The prince took hold and climbed up. When he got to the window, he was very surprised to see the witch!<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cWhere is Rapunzel?\u201d he called out. \u201cWhat have you done with her?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cYou will never see Rapunzel again!\u201d howled the witch.<\/em><\/p>\n And the old woman pushed the Prince so hard that he lost hold of the window. Down, down, he fell!<\/em><\/p>\n The Prince landed on some bushes. That helped with the fall, but the bushes had thorns and some went into his eyes. The Prince was blinded!<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Part 6: The Desert<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n For two years the poor blind Prince wandered the world, looking for Rapunzel. From morning to night, he called for her. But it was no use. At last, he reached a desert. One day, he heard beautiful singing. \u201cI would know that voice anywhere!\u201d he exclaimed. It was his dear Rapunzel! He went closer and closer to the voice he knew so well.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cMy Prince!\u201d called Rapunzel when she saw him. The two of them hugged tight. Two tears of joy dropped from Rapunzel’s face into the eyes of the Prince. All at once, he could see again!<\/em><\/p>\n What happened next, well, you may have a pretty good idea. The Prince and Rapunzel went back to the kingdom where the Prince lived. During all that time apart, both of them came to realize that it was right between them, and decided to be married.
